You start a blog and put hard work on blogging. Soon you find that you need more web resources - space, bandwidth, security - and you look for a web host better than the one you have. This happens often when the blogger buys a free or cheap web hosting plan and the blog grows faster than the blogger's expectations. Not much is lost if you face this issue. Most web hosts these days are glad to upgrade the hosting plan for a fee, especially for cloud-based hosting plans. Yet, it is better to try projecting the blog's requirements for at least 2-3 years. Choosing the web hosting plan that is best for your website or blog Consider various factors that are relevant for your website/ blog, and then pick the web host that suits your needs. I discuss below some key points that many bloggers miss while looking at the numbers flaunted by web hosting companies to lure customers. Note that most big web hosting companies have many plans, starting from cheap to very expensive ones, and their...

What is web hosting and domain? Explained in simple terms.

Let us first talk about web hosting , then we will go to domain name : What is web hosting and how it works When you open a blog or website, it remains on your laptop or smart phone till you place it on some special computer [called web host server] where it is available all the time. When someone types your website or blog's address on his internet browser, the browser sends a message to that server. The server sends data from the website, which is then displayed on the internet browser of the user. This is how websites are made available to visitors. This is how search engines look for results. This is how links on websites work. So, it is very basic that your website or blog is 'hosted' somewhere on the world wide web. There are big internet companies that do this job of web hosting for you either free or on payment. As you would guess, you get better services when you pay. From bloggers' point of view, web hosting is of great importance. If you open a free blog...

Give your blog independent identity without hosting costs!

Many of our visitors and followers are those who are scared of technology and have created a blog on a free host because it does not demand any tech know-how.  That leaves the blogger with many constraints. For example, the free Wordpress.com blog cannot have advertisements, cannot apply a new theme and cannot use plugins.   In most such cases, i.e. when the blogger is interested in just sharing his thoughts with the world, even the free blogs are good enough. The Blogger (=blogspot.com) blog even allows placing of ads and optimizing the blog for search engines.   But what the free blog on these platforms does not get is AN INDEPENDENT IDENTITY. The blog is seen as a casual or amateur blog and not as a professional one. In this post, let me tell you how you can shed that .wordpress or .blogspot easily and without spending much money. In case of .blogspot blog, the only money you spend is a small amount needed for buying the domain and annual charge for keeping i...

How to change the registrar of your blog's domain?

Domain name registration is done only through registrars registered with ICANN, the international body for internet naming. So, all domain name registrars have to abide by the norms set by ICANN. Generally speaking, you are free to change your registrar. However, in certain cases, you may be denied such a transfer, e.g. if some fee payment is pending or someone else has represented to them to be the real domain name holder. The present registrar might even charge you for the transfer, and that is supposed to be legal! Domain transfers are allowed only after 60 days of purchase of domain or its earlier transfer. The process is slightly procedure-bound. Registrars generally have a facility for domain transfer, which once clicked guides you till you agree to their terms, and then it generates a code for unlocking the domain for transfer. You then apply to the new registrar for accepting the transfer through such a link on their website, and supply the code. The new registrar usua...
