Hindi best blogs directory is out!

We present the Directory of Best Hindi Blogs to you. It has nearly 300 blogs, listed alphabetically [according to the operative part of the URL]. Alphabetisation is in Roman alphabets, as URLs are presently available in Roman script only.

At the end of the Directory of Hindi blogs, we have listed blog aggregators, blogging platforms, and blogs about blogs. We have tried to list only the platforms that do justice with the work they claim to be doing.

Since the Directory is quite long, instead of putting it here, we are updating the last year's page, which can be visited at this link:

Directory of Best Hindi Blogs: what’s in and what’s out: हिन्दी के सर्वोत्तम ब्लॉग

Like its previous edition, the Directory of Best Hindi Blogs for 2012-2013 is going to be a bouquet of blogs of various hues. Blogs on social topics, poems, religion and spirituality, literary history, personal musings and what not. The bouquet is going to be as rich as the blogosphre is: a blog by an 83 year old grandpa and one by a kid; a blog by a professor and one by a village boy lost in a metropolis; a police office updating people about its activities and an NGO seeking people’s cooperation… [Do look at these posts on what the Hindi blogsphere looks like.]

Widgets and codes for blogs: Bloggers beware!

What prompts us to write this quick post? Aren't we supposed to be extremely busy giving the last touches to the Directory of Best Hindi Blogs?

It is just to caution bloggers about harmful widgets and other code that is spreading in the Indian blogosphere.

During our survey of Hindi blog-world for quality blogs in the last four months, we have come across a number of blogs with malicious code. When we got some such stuff examined by an expert, she told us, the code has come mostly from a widget that promises high popularity for a blog. In some cases, adventurous bloggers have followed instructions given in a website to spruce up their blogs and ended up making their blogs carriers of a harmful code!

What type of code is this and how does it harm?

Protect your blog, computer against attacks

During our survey of the blogsphere for quality blogs, we are often faced with sites infected with malware. Thanks to very effective software on our computer, we have been able to detect and block them. We had quite a number of such attacks during the ongoing compilation of the Directory of Best Hindi Blogs and so comes this post.

To our bloggers who are not technically oriented and who do not wish to invest thousands of rupees on paid anti-virus programs, we are recommending here four FREE anti-virus programs. Of these, the Microsoft Security Essentials comes free if you have genuine Windows installed on your computer / laptop. Otherwise you can download it from here: Microsoft Security Essentials

Hindi blog directory: how big should it be?

Dilemmas on blog compilation and resolving them

We are at a very crucial stage of compilation of Directory of Best Hindi Blogs 2012-13. Our database – now over 10,000 strong – has over 4,000 active blogs. These been scrutinized three-four times and we have shortlisted about 650 blogs that meet our selection criteria when applied loosely. We were in two minds on many alternatives that we had, and had a brain-storming session yesterday to decide on these. Some of these, we share with you. More details will follow in another post, perhaps next week.

a. Whether to be strict with the criteria or be liberal?

Muzaffarnagar violence: social media abused again?

There are reports in the press about sharing of a video clip and some morphed newspaper clips over Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Some in the media have inferred that this sharing has contributed to fanning communal passions in Muzaffarnagar where about 30 people have lost life in the last one week.

Using Gimp for photo editing

If you are a regular blogger, you must have sometimes felt the need to edit photos. If you realise the importance of photos and other types of images in blogs, you must be doing image editing quite a lot. Bloggers dealing in photography, fashion and food cannot do without regular image editing.

What is image editing?

Any modification in the original image that you receive from any source qualifies as 'editing'. The modification may be an extensive image manipulation or just resizing the image to the width of your blog's sidebar. And when we are talking about the image and its source, we are referring to all types of them: photos, scans, computer graphics in the form of drawings, cartoons etc, graphic animations which are not videos, and sophisticated mix of different forms.

Various image attributes

We have a number of posts on use of images on blogs. If you do not have good knowledge about how images work and what to consider while putting them on your blog, do visit these resources:

Facebbok likes, tricks by Indian politicos

by Indian Top Blogs

In this post, we'd take you to the world of politicians and political parties in India who have high virtual presence. More than mere numbers, it is interesting to know where from their fans come.

Do look at the table given below. It gives details of top politicos, their total  FB 'likes' and the top three countries from where the 'likes' came. The data is as of end-August 2013. We give some broad references that we could draw from this:

BJP leaders, especially Narendra Modi, have a very big lead over Congress and its leaders [We left out Shashi Tharoor, giving him credit for his FB reputation that is more because of his non-political virtual engagements].

Some Congress leaders seem to have bought 'likes' in big quantities from countries where there is hardly much interest in Indian politics. This exposes them badly. What explains Ajay Maken's one-third 'likes' from Turkey when his Indian 'likes' are about 3% only? Some others [e.g. Ashok Gehlot, Aam Aadmi Party] too have overdone 'like' farming.
